This is a two-hour executive-level overview of the role that internal control plays in an audit conducted in accordance with GAAS. The session is intended to inform participants about the current professional requirements for auditor involvement with internal control and provide practical insights regarding meeting those requirements in a practical, cost-effective manner.  Topics addressed in this session include:

a. The role of internal control when the auditor does not intend to rely on internal control 

  • i.      Internal control as an integral part of the client’s environment. 
  • ii. Internal control and risk assessment. 
  • iii. Risk assessment procedures.
  • iv. Internal control objectives. 
  • v. Internal control components. 
  • vi. Extent of required understanding of the internal control system.
  • vii. Internal control limitations.
  • viii. Assessment of risk based upon an auditor’s understanding of his or her client’s system of internal control.

b. Internal control used for risk reduction purposes 

  • i. Circumstances where an auditor would choose to rely on internal control. 
  • ii. Design, Implementation, and/or Operational Effectiveness considerations. 
  • iii. Procedures employed to audit aspects of a client’s internal control system.
  • iv. Basic approaches to sampling internal control policies and/or procedures.
  • v. Evaluation of the results of auditing client internal control policies and/or procedures.
